Construction
You will need felt, card, scissors, needle, cotton, six pipe-cleaners and some kapok or foam stuffing. There are no seams. The edges are
oversewn together by hand with a machine that does zig-zag stitching.
All shapes are cut out of felt. First cut out the back and sides. Oversew the sides together from A to B and from C to D. Sew the back to the
sides from D to E, leaving the ears sticking out. Cut out the eyes, nose and hairpiece and sew them in place.
Fill the body tightly with stuffing, pushing it well into the nose with a pencil, then sew up the bottom from the middle to the legs; B to B, F to E
and G to G. Cut out the feet and two pieces of card slightly smaller and sew the pieces of felt together in pairs with the card inside for stiffening.
Make sure the legs are well stuffed and then sew the feet on.
Stiffen the ears by sewing a pipe-cleaner round the edge of each with the ends pushed into the head. Cut out the arms and sew the long sides
together. Fold the four pipe-cleaners in half and sew two into one end of each arm, making four fingers in each. Stuff the arms and sew on to
the body.
The clothing, or armour, is made of shapes of felt in any colour decorated with stitching and sewn in place.
If you want your Clanger to Stand up, a piece of stiff wire should be pushed well into the body up the legs before the feet are put on. The ends
can then be shaped to fit around the edges of the feet and sewn in with the feet. If you make the toy for a small child or a baby, don't use
wire or pipe-cleaners. The fingers can be made of wool or felt.
